Hosting Knowledge: Buying Knowledge

Domain Hosting: Although a majority of website hosting companies will only allow one domain name (e.g. com or net), some hosts offer hosting for multiple website names. This feature is great because it allows you to have multiple websites hosted on the same host and can be managed from one place. However, you will need to share your website space and bandwidth with another website. It's a smart idea to check the number of domains that your web host allows you to have on your account if your goal is to have multiple websites.

Email: When searching for a web hosting company, email should not be a problem. Many web hosting companies offer some kind of email account that allows you to have an address associated with your website: sales@yourwebsitename, or something similar. Keep in mind that your website space for email might be limited. If you don't need it, delete unwanted emails.

Support for customers: Customer support won't become a factor until they do. It is a good idea for customers to contact hosting support and get their feedback. Excellent customer service is a key factor. This will depend on the website company that you will be working with.

How do you choose the right web host for you?

It is a good idea to determine which website hosting is most important to you. If you have business videos to upload, you need a host who can give you plenty of bandwidth. Video often consumes hundreds, if not thousands more bandwidth than regular webpages. In this instance, your first priority should be to make sure your host has adequate bandwidth. If you do find a host you like, and bandwidth becomes an issue, make sure the hosting company allows you to upgrade your hosting services. Make sure you are prepared to pay for an upgrade.

If you have found a reliable host, consider hosting your website monthly instead of purchasing long-term discounted plans. Similar to other companies, long-term contracts will be offered at a lower price in order to encourage you to purchase them. While there is nothing wrong with a long-term contract, it is not worth the cost if you aren't satisfied with your host or find another host.

Ask your webmaster if you aren't sure which host you should sign up for. You can ask them to recommend web hosts, or even offer to host your site with them. Website hosts will offer additional features like ecommerce functionality and website statistics. They also have easy-to-use control panel software like Plesk. These are just a few of the many software programs that can be used to help you create and manage a website.

Dedicated Server

If none of these options sound appealing, or you are looking to create a gateway website with lots of content, images and videos, as well as the ability to install custom software, there is another option: a dedicated server. A dedicated server allows you to install your software and support your choice of programming languages. It is also dedicated to your website or web sites, depending on your needs. Although the cost of a dedicated server is often 8-10 times higher than a typical web host, it gives you greater control over your website and allows you to make changes. A dedicated server is a good option if you intend to host many websites.
